The Canada High Commission in India has helped to send back thousands of Canadian nationals who were stranded in India and Nepal due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as the Indian government imposed nation-wide lockdown and travel restrictions. They have closed their borders and even all domestic & international passenger flights have been suspended to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Nadir Patel, High Commissioner for Canada to India and many of his emergency response staff have been working together for weeks rescue flights that demand both diplomacy and nimble logistics. As of now, the Canadian High Commission in India has organized multiple flights to send Canadians back home from India. Nicole Girard (Consul General for South India), Annie Dube (Consul General for Western India) and Mia Yen (Consul General in Punjab) have been relentlessly working day and night coordinating rescue travel in their regions.
In the recent weeks, over 12 flights to Canada were operated from Delhi, Amritsar, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kathmandu (Nepal), but many more flights are needed to send back large numbers of Canada nationals who are still pleading for help.
Ms. Chrystia Freeland, the deputy Prime Minister, has strictly warned that any Canadians coming home from other countries are legally required to quarantine for 14 days to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
As of Saturday (April 25), Canada has confirmed a number of 43,888 confirmed cases and 2,302 patients have died due to COVID-19. However, 15,469 patients have completely recovered till date.
