Trudeau Government Removes Sikh Reference to Extremism

Just hours prior to Justin Trudeau visiting one of the largest Sikh temple in Canada this morning to mark the Vaisakhi celebrations, Liberal government agreed to remove the reference to Sikh extremism from a recent report on terrorism.

Prime Minister Trudeau and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan will be taking part in grand Vaisakhi Parade starting from Ross Street Gurdwara in Vancouver.

The public report on the Terrorism Threat to Canada for the first time listed Sikh Extremism as one of the top five extremist threats in Canada. The report drew the ire of the Sikh community when it was released in December last year.

The move is seen as to please the roughly half a million Canadian Sikhs before the general elections later this year. Most of these Sikhs are in suburban Vancouver and Greater Toronto Area.

Late Friday, the language was changed to remove any mention of religion, instead mentioning the threat posed by “extremists who support violent means to establish an independent state within India.”

Indian Government has always maintained that it feels Canada’s Liberal government is having soft corner for these extremists operating out of Canada which are always conspiring against the sovereign interests of India.
