The 13th edition of Indian Premier League, IPL 2020 is scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 19 till November 10. IPL is the professional Twenty 20 cricket league established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.
The tournament was originally scheduled to commence on 29 March 2020, but was suspended until 15 April due to the global coronavirus pandemic. After the lockdown in India was announced on 14 April, the BCCI suspended the tournament indefinitely. The IPL 2020 will run for 53 days, September 19 – November 10, in the UAE subject to clearance from the Government of India, announced the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday (2 Aug).
Another interesting change proposed in this year’s IPL is the evening match timings. During earlier editions of the tournaments, the games usually started at 8 pm and went on till midnight which sometimes became an issue. In 2020, the matches will begin at 7:30 pm instead of 8.
With BCCI announcing the dates, protest against the Chinese firm Vivo as title sponsor for the tournament has grown up in the country.
India’s apex trader body — Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) — has opposed the decision taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to retain Chinese firm Vivo as title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The trade body has urged the Centre to not grant permission to hold the event that will take place between September and November in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The letter undersigned by CAIT National General Secretary Praveen Khandelwal to the Union ministers read: “At a time when Chinese aggression on Indian borders in last month gave much rise to the sentiments of people of India against China and the Union Government under the visionary leadership of 2is espousing his call for ‘vocal for local’ and ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’, the decision of the BCCI runs contrary to the broad policy of the government.”
