A Columbia Icefield adventure tour bus lost control and rolled on the steep road to the famous Athabasca glacier in Jasper National Park, Alberta. Three people were killed and several injured. There were 27 passengers in the sightseeing bus at the time of the crash.
The incident involved one of the specially made off-road tour buses Ice Explorer that ferry visitors onto the glacier, owned by Pursuit. The company operates tours of the ice fields, which are part of the Athabasca Glacier in the Canadian Rockies.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported that several emergency workers and officials from fire departments are at the scene and more details are awaited. RCMP are investigating the cause of the roll-over with the support of a collision analyst.
Critically injured passengers were being transported from the crash site to various Alberta hospitals on helicopter ambulances, the report said. A spokesperson for Alberta Health Services said that several hospitals in the province were preparing to receive patients, some of them in very critical and serious condition.
The Columbia Icefield adventure tour to the Athabasca glacier is a very popular and most sought activity by the people visiting Jasper National Park. The tour that is featured as a Signature Experience by Destination Canada is operated by the Pursuit company.
