Remembering Innocent Victims of Air India Flight 182 “Kanishka”

Today, 23 June marks 35th commemoration anniversary of the unfortunate and the deadliest terrorist attack in Canadian history. On June23, 1985, a bomb exploded on Air India Flight 182 “Kanishka” that was en route from Toronto to London, England killing all 329 people on board. Most of them on board were Indo Canadians.

Justice John Major who headed the inquiry commission had earlier stated “Canadian authorities should have known that Air India Flight 182 was a terrorist target.” He added “It was failure of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canada’s spy agency Canadian Security and Intelligence Services (CSIS) not have been able to prevent the tragedy.”

The family members of bombing victims still feel that the government did nothing substantial to bring the terrorists from Babbar Khalsa group to justice.

The Canadian government has though dedicated four memorials in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal to remember the victims. These memorials will forever stand as a reminder of the innocent lives lost during a very sad chapter in Canada’s history.

The Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a statement said “Today, on the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, I join Canadians across the country to remember and pay tribute to all Canadian victims of terrorism. We offer our deepest sympathies to families and friends who have lost loved ones, and to everyone living with the pain and trauma caused by these senseless acts of violence.”

“Today and every day, we will honour those we have lost to terrorism by continuing to fight hate and intolerance, and work to make Canada and the world a safer and more secure place for everyone,” he added.
