The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television revealed this year’s Canadian Screen Awards winners in a digital series of pre-recorded online videos this week. The videos were being live-streamed on the academy’s website as well as on its Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels.
The annual in-person Canadian Screen Awards galas celebrating homegrown film, TV and digital media earlier scheduled to be held in March were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CBC comedy “Schitt’s Creek” made history with a record 26 nominations. There were 144 film, television, and digital media categories in total.
The first night of the online version of the Canadian Screen Awards on Monday, May 25, 2020, CBC’s flagship newscast “The National” and the documentary “The Accountant of Auschwitz” were the big winners. They got four trophies each during the video announcements, which covered the categories of broadcast news, sports programming, and documentary and factual.
“The National” took trophies including best news anchor for the original four co-hosts — Adrienne Arsenault, Rosemary Barton, Andrew Chang, and Ian Hanomansing and “The Accountant of Auschwitz” won honours including best history documentary program or series.
Actress-filmmaker Elle-Maija Tailfeathers, journalist Lloyd Robertson, and Toronto Raptors public address announcer Herbie Kuhn were the presenters of Monday night’s awards.
On the second night of virtual presentations from the Canadian Screen Awards “The Amazing Race Canada” was the big winner. The perennial hit travel contest won six trophies, including best reality/competition program or series.
The animated children’s program “PAW Patrol” on TVOKids won four awards, including best pre-school program or series, and best direction in animation.
“Corner Gas Animated” was declared the best animated program or series, which airs on CTV Comedy Channel. It was next with three awards.
“Never Have I Ever” star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and comedy actress Emma Hunter were the presenters during Tuesday’s live-streams.
On its third night, the most trophies were nabbed by “Cardinal” with overall seven, including best drama series, best writing for a drama series and best lead actor and lead actress in a drama series.
“Schitt’s Creek”, which won six awards garnered widespread critical acclaim including a spread in the New York Times and four nominations at the 2019 Emmy Awards.
In drama Category, “Anne With an E” won five awards for best photography, costume design, original music and production design.
“Baroness von Sketch Show”, Sketch comedy series was also awarded with five trophies — winning in every category for which it was nominated.
