The coronavirus (COVID-19) is affecting countries and territories around the world. The coronavirus causes respiratory illness (like the flu) with symptoms such as a cough, fever, difficulty in breathing and spread with infected human to human. Canada, world’s second largest country by area, is one of the most beautiful and most visited country in the world. Travelers visit Canada mostly either for tourism or study.
Tourism industry is one of the industries that move people beyond state and national boundaries. They bring a physical connectivity among the world. But due to COVID-19, which is rising infected cases day by day across the world, the need of transnational and transcontinental travel has been paused for a while, but it will never cease.
As of 1st April 2020, 8,612 coronavirus cases and 101 deaths have been confirmed in Canada. As the coronavirus has been spreading quickly in Canada…. It has made a bad impact on each and every section of tourism as per below.
- Canada has closed its borders to the vast majority of foreign nationals. Ports of Entry and airports have been closed to most individuals who wish to enter.
- Anyone entering Canada will be forced to enter a mandatory 14-day quarantine. Canada’s Health Minister has announced that this quarantine will be enforced and that those breaking quarantine may be subject to fines and jail time. Certain exemptions will be made for essential workers.
- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had announced the closure of the Canada-U.S. border to all “non-essential travel”. This closure was mutually negotiated between both countries. Speaking in Ottawa Wednesday morning, Prime Minister Trudeau stated that the “non-essential travel” includes all forms of recreation, tourism and shopping trips between both countries.
- Many other flight from or via China, where the virus originated, has been cancelled to avoid more COVID-19 cases in Canada
- Air Canada, the national carrier of Canada, efforts to simplify and streamline the re-protection process for their customers, Air Canada has updated its previously issued change fee waiver policy (airline will allow them to make a one-time change to their flight without incurring a change fee) for future travel.
- Air Canada is to reduce capacity for Q2 2020 by 85 per cent to 90 per cent compared to last year, and will place 15,200 members of its unionized workforce on Off Duty Status and furlough about 1,300 managers. The workplace reductions will be effective on or about April 3, 2020 and are intended to be temporary.
- Passengers who were in the cruise ship ‘Diamond Princess’ are subject to a mandatory 14-day isolation at a quarantine facility upon arrival in Canada.
- From 25th March 2020, Canada Visa Applications Centres in many countries including India, China, Italy, France etc. has stop accepting visa applications until end of the April.
