The escalating scandal involving PM Trudeau has triggered the resignation of recently appointed Treasury Board President Jane Philpott. Trudeau’s own principal secretary as well as another cabinet member had already stepped down.
On Monday, Philpott expressed unhappiness about the government’s response to allegations that officials inappropriately pressured former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould last year to help major construction company SNC-Lavalin Group Inc avoid a corruption trial.
“Sadly, I have lost confidence in how the government has dealt with this matter and in how it has responded to the issues raised,” Philpott said in a statement while resigning as member of the cabinet.
In her letter to PM Trudeau, Jane Philpott wrote “It is a fundamental doctrine of the rule of law that our attorney-general should not be subjected to political pressure or interference regarding the exercise of her prosecutorial discretion in criminal cases”.
