It’s almost nine months since Justin Trudeau’s controversial India visit that marred bilateral relations. There had been no official engagements between the two governments after the visit and no breakthrough is expected in near future as none of the government seems inclined to start the dialogue again.
The political experts are also predicting that the fresh boost to bilateral relations is most likely after the new government elected after Lok Sabha elections in India and Federal elections in Canada later next year.
There were no ministerial level bilateral visits either during this period. At least two senior ministers in Modi government, Suresh Prabhu and Nitin Gadkari who were supposed to be visit Canada earlier in September this year had cancelled their visits.
High-level bilateral meeting between external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and her Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland were attempted but didn’t materialize. It is also learnt that Canada’s minister of environment, Catherine McKenna’s proposed visit to India may not finally happen.
Indian Officials don’t rule out bilateral meetings in the months ahead though nothing is planned at this time.
